A family walked into a shelter with broken hearts and walked out with two brothers who needed them just as much.

When a rescue took in two bonded brothers, Romeo and Fluffy, their owner could no longer care for them, and brought them to a local shelter, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Despite being the smaller of the two, Romeo (the cat in the front) was fiercely protective of his brother. They had been through a lot together, and it was clear that they were determined to stick by each other’s side. For months, Romeo and Fluffy remained at the shelter, waiting patiently for their chance at their forever home. Together, they leaned on each other while waiting for their forever family.

That family had recently lost their cat of 14 years. While being nervous about the thought of a new cat, they were ready to open their home and their hearts. They came in looking for one kitten, but little did they know they would be leaving with two — because once they saw the bond between these brothers, splitting them up was never an option.

“Romeo was always looking after Fluffy, even when we came in to visit to get to know them both, we could tell right away that it would be heartbreaking if we split these two guys up. Both of them seemed to have been through a traumatic experience and stayed close to their cubby bed."

Both kittens had recently been treated with health issues, and you could tell their guard was up, understandably so. Even while Romeo was sick, he still stood guard of Fluffy while he was recovering from his health issues. The shelter pulled out all the stops to make sure these two guys had the best chance of being healthy and adopted by a loving family.

It was decided – knowing that both kittens were on their way to recovery, their new family was taking both of them to their forever home!

"We instantly felt a connection with these two kittens and knew it was going to take time, love, and care for them to trust us."

Both kittens were skittish at first, just as they had been in the shelter, but quickly warmed up and let their personalities shine.

As the days went on, the family decided on the new names of their two adorable kittens. Arnold - the protector and his sidekick Newman! Arnold was finally trusting enough to let Newman out of his sight, and it was the first sign they were starting to feel safe.

Soon, Arnold and Newman warmed up to their new home and loving family. They were two rambunctious boys who had the freedom and space to play and be cats. The days of being scared were long behind them as they knew this was where they were meant to be.

Finding their favorite hiding places, and discovering new napping places, they were quickly making themselves right at home. Not to mention they were starting to get their appetites back and growing before the families’ eyes.

Now the brothers spend their days playing, sleeping side by side, and living life to the fullest — surrounded by more cat toys than they know what to do with. Whether it's running full speed down the hallways or chasing each other in circles, the days of not knowing what the next will hold with an uncertain future are far behind them.

They filled a void in their family's heart just as much as that family filled one in theirs.
