Two bonded kitten siblings were put out on the street as tiny babies, far too small to face the world on their own. Now, curled up together in a foster home, they are warm, well-fed, and rarely more than a paw's reach apart.

Mittens and Billie started life in Compton, California, in the care of a kind young man who gave them a roof over their heads. For those first several weeks, the little ones had someone looking out for them and wanted for nothing.
That security did not last. When the kittens were about seven weeks old, the situation in the home changed, and the young man was made to put them outside. It was a hard turn for everyone involved, him included. Far too small to fend for themselves, the frightened babies were spotted and rescued, then placed in the care of Friends of Normie, who put them in a loving foster home.
The two are inseparable, bound by the kind of closeness only siblings share. Mittens is a handsome gray-and-black tabby boy, and his sister Billie is a striking girl with a swirled coat of gray, black, and orange. Wherever one of them wanders, the other is rarely more than a step behind.

For the first time, Mittens and Billie had everything a kitten should have from the start. There was warmth and safety, full bellies and soft beds, and the steady kindness of people they could trust. Little by little, the pair who had known the uncertainty of the street began to understand that this time, the comfort was there to stay.
As the days passed, their worry gave way to curiosity. They started venturing out to investigate their new surroundings, discovering toys worth chasing and high perches worth climbing, growing bolder and steadier with each day.

Once they felt secure, their personalities began to surface, and the two could not be more different. Mittens is the watchful one, taking his time with new people and new places, and hanging back until he has decided the coast is clear.
What comes after the wait is always worth it. "Mittens is initially the more cautious of the two. But once he feels safe, he blossoms into a sweet, affectionate cuddle bug with a playful, chatty personality," Friends of Normie shared with LoveMeow.

Billie needs no such warming up. She meets the world head-on, the first to bound toward anything new and to welcome her favorite people the moment they come through the door.
"Billie is curious, affectionate, and full of joyful energy. She loves greeting people with happy little meows and quickly melts into cuddles once she trusts you," Friends of Normie shared. Different as they are, one thing stays constant: their devotion to one another.

Mittens and Billie face every new experience side by side, drawing confidence from each other the way only littermates can. They curl up nose to nose to sleep and press close together whenever something unfamiliar comes their way, each one a little braver for having the other near.
Having weathered such an uncertain start together, the two now spend their days doing what safe, happy kittens do, chasing toys across the floor, scaling the cat tree, and stretching out to nap wherever the mood takes them. It all traces back to the second rescue that reached them in time and the foster home that took them in.

The home Mittens and Billie were born into couldn't keep them, but through every hard turn, the two had each other, and they still do. Braver by the day, they take on each new thing as a team of two, one leading and one following close behind, neither of them ever alone.
