The 5 Best Cat Rescue Stories of September 2026

1. A Mama Cat Hid Seven Kittens Under a Fallen Tree Outside a Senior Living Facility and Kept Every One of Them Alive
Mildred, called Millie, had been surviving outdoors for months when someone noticed movement under a fallen tree on the grounds of a senior living facility on the south side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Underneath were seven kittens, roughly two and a half to three weeks old, five boys and two girls.
Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership took the call, and the response was immediate. "We couldn't say no to helping them, so we quickly made some calls, and within 15 minutes my husband and daughter arrived with old towels, Churu, and carriers," foster Lori White said. The whole family came in together.
The kittens were named for the place that sheltered them: Norman, Stanley, Bernard, Eugene, and Otis Henry, with Dottie and Pearl Louise. Somebody christened the litter the Golden Years Gang, and the name stuck. Millie is regaining the weight she lost raising seven kittens on whatever she could find, and all eight of them are indoors now.

2. A Cat Was Passed From Home to Home for Years Until a Single Microchip Scan Sent Him Back to the People Who Raised Him
Truly Scrumptious was adopted as a kitten in 2022 from Whiskers-A-GoGo, a volunteer-run rescue in Brooklyn, New York. Then his adopter's relationship ended, and the gray cat began moving. One home, then another, then a caretaker whose landlord would not allow him. He ended up on a Brooklyn sidewalk.
A rescuer named Bronwen found him there and did the one thing that changed everything: she scanned him. The chip led straight back to Whiskers-A-GoGo, which had never stopped being listed as his people. They brought him home.
It took about three weeks for him to understand that the moving had stopped. What emerged was a cat who holds hands while he is being cuddled and plays fetch with toy mice. Nobody had been looking for him. His microchip was the only thing that remembered he belonged somewhere.

3. Two Tonkinese Cats Pulled Off the Street Are Too Shy to Approach Anyone Alone and Entirely Different When They Have Each Other
Jagger and Jewell came off the streets of south-east Queensland, Australia, and into foster care with Best Friends Felines. Both have the pale blue eyes of their breed. Apart, they are two frightened cats. Together, they are something else.
"They take comfort from one another and rely on each other for confidence as they navigate the world around them," Judy of Best Friends Felines said. The rescue is honest about where each of them is. Of Jewell: "In time she may become a lap cat, but this will take a significant amount of time and patience." Of Jagger: "He is not at the stage where he will allow pats but is very curious about the goings-on in his current foster home."
He did let a veterinarian lift him out of his carrier and weigh him without a struggle, which for a cat at his stage is a considerable thing. They are available for adoption, and they are going together.

4. Five Feral Kittens Could Not Be Touched Without Thick Gloves and Changed Their Minds in Under Two Days
Sonora Cat Rescue, an all-volunteer group in Sonora, California, had been trapping at the same residential property for two years, where elderly homeowners feed a feral colony. In September, the group brought in five kittens, roughly six weeks old: Acorn, Spaghetti, ButterNut, Patty Pan, and Zucchini.
They arrived unhandleable. They did not stay that way. "It hasn't even been 2 full days, and these spice nuggets I couldn't grab without gloves are now approaching me, leaning into scritches, and even purring," said Sadie Anderson, the rescue's president.
Anderson explained why the timing mattered so much. "When kittens are 5 to 8 weeks old, their personalities are very malleable," she said. "Once they get to be around 9 weeks old, that window slams shut." Five kittens came out of a colony inside that window, and five kittens are now fully socialized. They are preparing to join another rescued group known as the Cheers gang.

5. A Kitten Found Alone in a Cardboard Box Weighed 288 Grams and Now Pushes Around an 88-Pound Dog
Dove Tree was found on a public green in South East London, alone in a cardboard box, with no mother and no siblings anywhere nearby. The Stray Cat Club took her in.
She was so small that everyone assumed she was two or three weeks old. She was closer to five, and severely malnourished, weighing 288 grams. That gap between her size and her age is the whole measure of how long she had been without food.
She eats regularly now and gains steadily, and the personality that arrived with the weight has gone in an unexpected direction. "We're also beginning to see her funny little personality shining through more and more each day, including bullying the resident 40kg dog," the rescue reported. The dog in question is a gentle giant of roughly 88 pounds who appears to have accepted the arrangement.
