A one-year-old tiny mama cat refused to give up until every one of her kittens was safe. Now she is ready to find her person.

When Jennifer, a foster volunteer with IndyHumane, welcomed a tiny young cat and her newborn trio into her home at the start of 2026, she wasn't sure what was in store for them. LoveMeow spoke to Jennifer, who confirmed that the mama, affectionately named Mouse by the shelter, was estimated to be just one year old, though she looked more like a kitten herself. Weighing less than six pounds, this little cat was determined to be the best mother she could be.
From the moment Mouse arrived, her personality was impossible to ignore. Endlessly curious, she explored every inch of her surroundings, scaled the cat tree, leapt onto the food cart, and to Jennifer's great surprise, cleared every gate set up to keep the family contained. "She's a really good jumper," Jennifer laughed.

Then, without warning, things took a frightening turn. Mouse stopped eating and began vomiting. Her foster rushed her to the shelter, where veterinarians discovered she was running a fever. She received fluids and anti-nausea medication, but by Monday, Mouse had been moved to the ICU.

But this cat was a fighter. The good news came first: her fever broke, and she tested negative for Panleukopenia, a highly contagious and often fatal disease. Still, Mouse needed time to recover, and Jennifer quietly prepared herself for the possibility that Mouse and her kittens might not be reunited. At under six pounds, sustaining a litter long-term would be a serious challenge.
Then came the wonderful surprise.

The shelter made the careful decision to reunite Mouse with her kittens, and it went better than anyone had dared hope. "Mama Mouse was doing so much better," Jennifer shared. "It was truly a best-case scenario." The foster team watched closely, ready to step in at a moment's notice for supplemental feedings or whatever Mouse and her family might need.

Scrappy, spirited, and fiercely devoted, Mouse resumed motherhood without skipping a beat. Her kittens grew. Their eyes opened. They thrived.

Through it all, Mouse's personality continued to bloom. The tiny cat who had once vaulted over every obstacle began showing her gentler side, sweet and affectionate, seeking out Jennifer for quiet moments, perching on her shoulders, and pressing her cheek against hers.

"She is going to be a wonderful addition to her future forever family," Jennifer told LoveMeow.

That future arrived sooner than anyone expected. Mouse's kittens have grown healthy and strong, a testament to the round-the-clock care of IndyHumane's veterinary team and the dedication of their foster family. She may be small, but Mouse has proven she is mighty and full of heart, and it seems the right person knew it, too. While this story was being written, Mama Mouse was adopted, finding her forever home. Her happy ending wasn't waiting around the corner. It had already arrived.
