A couple rescued a 19-year-old cat from a kill shelter in the nick of time. The senior kitty has not stopped purring ever since.

Meet Archmage Shabadoo!

When Karyn Poplin of Kitty Adventure Rescue League and Sanctuary (in Fort Worth, Texas) learned about the Archmage's plight, she and her husband knew just the right home for the old boy.

"He was left at a shelter to be euthanized because his previous family was moving," Karyn told Love Meow.

They took him out of the shelter and brought him to his new home at their cat sanctuary. He was a bit rough around the edges, but Archmage quickly settled in.

He switched on his loud purr motor and was the happiest he'd ever been.

The kitty had a lot of matted fur that needed to be removed. Kitty Adventure Rescue League and Sanctuary

The couple runs a sanctuary for special needs, disabled, elderly and otherwise unadoptable felines in the DFW Texas area.

Karyn saved them from death row and gave them a comfortable, loving home to spend their retirement.

"He felt right at home as soon as we brought him here. He didn't really hide or act shy once he figured out he could get canned food just by looking adorable," Karyn told Love Meow.

Archmage looks like a cartoon character (with food in his beard).

"His eyes are constantly dilated, which was likely caused by a nutritional deficiency in his younger years. He's been examined by our vet and he's perfectly fine for his age."

Archmage is very opinionated. He is picky about his food and likes dinner a certain way.

"He'll sleep next to you, but only so that you know his food bowl is empty and he's not happy about it," Karyn told Love Meow.

"He doesn't talk much, but he'll paw at you for attention if he thinks you're ignoring him."

Every day Archmage fills the house with his loud purrs.

He loves getting attention from his humans and sleeping all day in his cozy bed.

The handsome boy is turning 20 in a few months (around November).

Despite his age, he's still a kitten at heart :).
